Listen to this article

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

Context:The book of 1 John was written by the apostle John to address various issues within the early Christian community. This particular verse is part of a larger passage that emphasizes the importance of love in the lives of believers.

Understanding the verse:

  • “My little children”:John addresses his readers affectionately, using a term of endearment to express his care and concern for them.
  • “Let us not love in word, neither in tongue”:John encourages believers not to merely express love through empty words or superficial speech. True love goes beyond verbal affirmation or empty promises.
  • “But in deed and in truth”:John urges believers to demonstrate their love through actions that align with the truth. Love should be visible and tangible, expressed through genuine acts of kindness, compassion, and selflessness.
  • Key teachings and lessons:
  • Genuine love is characterised by action:The verse challenges us to move beyond empty words and put love into action. Love is not merely a sentiment or an emotion but a commitment that compels us to act in ways that benefit and bless others.
  • Love requires authenticity:John emphasises the importance of truth. True love is not hypocritical or deceptive but authentic and sincere. It aligns with God’s truth and reflects His character.
  • Love is a distinguishing mark of believers:Throughout the book of 1 John, love is presented as a defining characteristic of those who follow Christ. By loving one another genuinely, believers demonstrate their relationship with God and imitate His love.

Application:

  • Reflect on your love for others:Take a moment to evaluate how you express love to those around you. Are your actions consistent with your words? Are you genuinely seeking to bless and serve others?
  • Prioritise acts of love:Look for practical ways to demonstrate love in your daily life. This can include acts of kindness, forgiveness, encouragement, and support. Seek to meet the needs of others and show them the love of Christ.
  • Seek authenticity and truth:Ensure that your love is genuine and aligned with God’s truth. Strive to live a life of integrity and sincerity, reflecting the character of Christ.

By studying and applying 1 John 3:18, we can deepen our understanding of love, align our actions with our words, and reflect God’s love in our relationships with others.
