“Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.”

Now, let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning and significance.

“Hereby know we that we dwell in him”: This phrase emphasizes the assurance and confidence believers have in their relationship with God. The phrase “dwell in him” refers to the intimate union between believers and God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we become united with Him, and He abides in us. This concept is reiterated throughout the New Testament, particularly in the writings of the apostle Paul.

“And he in us”: This statement emphasizes the reciprocal nature of the relationship between believers and God. Not only do we dwell in Him, but He also dwells in us. This indwelling of God’s presence within us is made possible through the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who empowers, guides, and transforms believers, leading them into a closer relationship with God.

“Because he hath given us of his Spirit”: This phrase highlights the role of the Holy Spirit in confirming and assuring believers of their relationship with God. The Holy Spirit is a gift given to believers by God. Through the Holy Spirit, believers receive spiritual insight, understanding, and the ability to experience the presence and power of God in their lives.

In summary, 1 John 4:13 underscores the intimate relationship between believers and God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It affirms that through faith in Jesus Christ, believers can be assured of their union with God and experience the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. This verse encourages believers to recognize and embrace the presence of God’s Spirit as evidence of their relationship with Him.

It’s worth noting that the context of 1 John 4:13 is a broader discussion on love. The preceding verses speak about the love of God and how it is made complete in us as we love one another. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit enables believers to love as God loves, serving as a testament to their relationship with Him.

Remember, studying the Bible involves not only examining individual verses but also considering the broader context and themes within the book and the entire Bible.
