Listen to this article

“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”

Context:The book of 1 John was written by the apostle John to encourage and instruct believers in their faith. In this particular verse, John focuses on the manifestation of God’s love through the sending of His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world.

Manifestation of God’s Love:The verse begins by stating that “in this was manifested the love of God toward us.” The term “manifested” means to reveal or make known. John emphasises that God’s love toward humanity became evident or visible through a specific act.

God’s Sending of His Son:The verse goes on to explain that God sent His only begotten Son into the world. This refers to the incarnation of Jesus Christ, where God took on human flesh and entered the world as a baby born in Bethlehem. The term “only begotten” signifies the unique and one-of-a-kind relationship between Jesus and the Father.

Purpose of Christ’s Coming:The verse continues by stating the purpose of God sending His Son into the world. It states, “that we might live through him.” This reveals the redemptive mission of Jesus. He came to bring spiritual life and reconciliation between God and humanity. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus offers eternal life and the opportunity for a restored relationship with God.

Significance:1 John 4:9 encapsulates the essence of the Gospel message and the heart of Christianity. It highlights the extraordinary love of God, who willingly sent His Son into the world to bring salvation and eternal life to humanity. The verse reminds believers of the immense sacrifice made on their behalf and encourages them to live in response to God’s love.
