1 Kings 1:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:34

“And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.”

Context:First Kings 1 provides us with the account of David’s declining years and the transition of power to his son Solomon. David had grown old, and his ability to lead and govern was diminishing. Adonijah, David’s eldest living son, saw this as an opportunity to seize the throne for himself. However, Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and the prophet Nathan were aware of David’s earlier promise to Solomon and took action to ensure that God’s chosen successor would ascend to the throne.

Explanation:In this verse, Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, reminds David of his oath or promise made to her, which was confirmed by swearing to the Lord. David had solemnly promised Bathsheba that their son Solomon would become the next king of Israel and sit upon his throne. Bathsheba, with the help of Nathan the prophet, brings this promise to David’s attention to prevent Adonijah from wrongfully usurping the throne.

Key Themes and Lessons:Faithfulness to Promises: David made a promise to Bathsheba and swore to the Lord, which had significant implications for the future of the kingdom. This verse highlights the importance of being faithful to our commitments and promises, especially those made before God. God expects His people to honor their commitments, just as David was expected to keep his word. Divine Appointment and Sovereignty: The transition of power from David to Solomon was not solely a human decision but part of God’s plan. God had chosen Solomon to be the next king, and David’s promise to Bathsheba aligned with God’s divine purpose. This verse reminds us that God is ultimately in control and orchestrates events according to His sovereign will. Fulfillment of Prophecy: This passage also reflects the fulfillment of Nathan’s earlier prophecy regarding Solomon’s kingship (see 2 Samuel 7:12-16). The promise made by David to Bathsheba was an affirmation of the prophetic word given to David by Nathan. This teaches us that God’s promises and prophecies will come to pass in due time, and we should trust in His faithfulness. The Importance of Godly Succession: The orderly and peaceful transfer of power from one king to the next was crucial for the stability and continuity of the kingdom of Israel. By ensuring Solomon’s ascension to the throne, Bathsheba and Nathan helped maintain the integrity of God’s chosen line of kingship. This highlights the significance of godly succession and the preservation of God’s purposes and plans for His people.

Application:As we reflect on 1 Kings 1:17, we can apply its lessons to our own lives. It reminds us to be faithful to our commitments and promises, both to God and to others. We should seek God’s guidance in all our decisions, recognizing His sovereignty and trusting in His divine plan. Additionally, this verse encourages us to fulfill our roles and responsibilities in a manner that upholds godly succession and contributes to the greater purposes of God’s kingdom.
