1 Kings 10:2
And she came to Ierusalem with a very great traine, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when shee was come to Solomon, she communed with him, of all that was in her heart. 1 Kings 10:2 (KJV)
First Kings 10 records the famous visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon. Having heard of Solomon’s extraordinary wisdom and wealth, she journeyed to test him with difficult questions, bringing a splendid retinue, spices, gold, and precious stones as gifts.
The verse highlights the magnitude of her arrival: a very great train of camels bearing spices, abundant gold, and precious stones. Such an impressive procession underscored her wealth, status, and the seriousness of her purpose.
Her purpose was not merely ceremonial. The Queen sought a genuine communion with Solomon, wishing to discuss “all that was in her heart.” She came to inquire, to learn, and to evaluate the reputation of Solomon’s wisdom.
From this encounter several lessons emerge for believers. First, the importance of seeking wisdom is evident; the Queen recognized Solomon’s reputation and pursued it intentionally. Likewise, Christians are called to pursue divine wisdom through Scripture and godly counsel. Second, the value of sincere inquiry is shown—she approached Solomon with heartfelt questions rather than empty flattery. Our own prayers and conversations with spiritual mentors should be marked by honesty and genuine curiosity. Third, the passage reminds us of the responsibility to share the knowledge we receive. Solomon’s insights were a blessing, and the Queen’s openness to receive them models a reciprocal sharing of truth. Finally, discernment is highlighted; the Queen tested Solomon with hard questions to verify his reputation. Believers must likewise test teachings against God’s Word and be willing to ask challenging questions.
Application follows naturally. Actively seek wisdom through diligent Bible study and by consulting mature believers. Approach every discussion with humility, sincerity, and a sincere heart. Be ready to share the insights God has given you, fostering conversations that build up others. Exercise discernment by measuring all counsel against Scripture, asking probing questions when needed. Though this verse captures only a fragment of the Queen of Sheba’s visit, a broader reading of the chapter reveals deeper insights into the dynamics of wisdom, hospitality, and divine revelation.
