1 Kings 11:10

Posted on 14 Feb at 08:46

And had commaunded him concerning this thing, that hee should not goe after other gods: but hee kept not that which the Lord commanded. 1 Kings 11:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the narrative of King Solomon’s reign and his subsequent downfall because of disobedience to God. To understand its significance, the surrounding context must be considered. Solomon began his reign celebrated for extraordinary wisdom, wealth, and accomplishments. Yet, as time passed, his heart was drawn away from the LORD. He married many foreign women who worshiped false gods, violating the divine command that Israel should not intermarry with surrounding nations that practiced paganism.

In 1 Kings 11 we read that Solomon’s many wives turned his heart after other gods; verse 4 specifically records that his wives “turned away his heart after other gods.” Consequently Solomon erected altars and offered sacrifices to these foreign deities—practices strictly prohibited by the LORD. Verse 9 records God’s disappointment and anger, declaring that Solomon had not kept the covenant and statutes God had commanded him. Verse 10 then states that God had explicitly warned Solomon not to go after other gods, but Solomon did not obey the LORD’s command.

This moment is pivotal in Solomon’s story, highlighting his disobedience and departure from the path of faithfulness. Despite receiving direct instruction from the Lord, Solomon chose idolatry, leading both himself and the nation astray. The subsequent verses reveal the penalty: God declares He will tear the kingdom away from Solomon’s descendants, except for the sake of David, and give it to one of Solomon’s servants. The once‑united kingdom will be divided after Solomon’s death into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.

The passage serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of obeying God’s commandments and the severe consequences that can follow when believers compromise their faith or adopt foreign practices contrary to God’s teachings. It underscores that even a king endowed with wisdom can fall when he neglects the covenant, and it calls believers to guard their hearts against idolatry and to remain steadfast in obedience to the LORD.
