1 Kings 11:43

Posted on 14 Feb at 14:06

And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the citie of Dauid his father: and Rehoboam his sonne reigned in his stead. 1 Kings 11:43 (KJV)

During his early reign Solomon followed the ways of the Lord and sought the Lord’s guidance. As he grew older, however, he turned away from God, embraced foreign gods, and married many foreign wives who led him astray. The verse marks the conclusion of Solomon’s reign and highlights his death.

The phrase “Solomon slept with his fathers” is a euphemism for death, indicating that he joined his ancestors in the afterlife. “And was buried in the city of David his father” tells us that Solomon’s body was laid to rest in Jerusalem, the city of David, the same place where his father King David was buried.

“Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead” records the transfer of power to Solomon’s son. Rehoboam succeeded Solomon as king, and after the kingdom divided he ruled over Judah. The division of the united kingdom into Israel and Judah occurred after Rehoboam’s decision to impose heavy labor on the people, which provoked a rebellion (1 Kings 12:16‑24). Jeroboam became king of the northern kingdom of Israel, while Rehoboam governed the southern kingdom of Judah.

Lessons from the verse include the consequences of disobedience: Solomon began well but ended poorly, and his unfaithfulness led to the downfall and division of the nation. God’s faithfulness to His promises is also evident; despite Solomon’s failure, God kept His covenant with David, allowing Rehoboam to inherit a portion of the kingdom as promised. The importance of leaving a godly legacy is underscored, for Solomon’s choices affected future generations and resulted in lasting national division.

Application: Believers are urged to remain faithful to God, avoiding compromise and idolatry, and to prioritize their relationship with Him. One’s actions have repercussions for future generations, so we should strive to live in a way that honors God and leaves a positive, godly legacy. Even when we falter, we can trust in God’s steadfast faithfulness to fulfill His plans.

Remember, this verse is only a small part of Solomon’s larger narrative. Studying the surrounding chapters of 1 Kings will provide a fuller understanding of the themes and lessons contained in the biblical account.
