1 Kings 12:7

“And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants forever.”

Context:In 1 Kings 12, we find the account of the division of the united kingdom of Israel after the death of King Solomon. Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, became the king. The people of Israel approached Rehoboam, requesting relief from the heavy burdens placed on them during Solomon’s reign. Rehoboam sought counsel from the elders who had served his father and the young men who grew up with him.

Key Themes and Lessons:

  • Leadership Attitude: The verse highlights the importance of a leader’s attitude and response to the needs and concerns of the people they serve. The elders advised Rehoboam to be a servant‑leader, showing humility, empathy, and a willingness to meet the people’s needs. This approach would foster loyalty and support from the people.
  • Servant Leadership: The concept of servant leadership is emphasized in this verse. A leader who serves and cares for the people under their authority, rather than exploiting or burdening them, is likely to earn their respect, loyalty, and cooperation. Jesus also taught the importance of servant leadership (Matthew 20:25-28).
  • The Power of Words: The advice given to Rehoboam highlights the impact of words. The elders encouraged him to speak good words to the people. Kind, gracious, and wise words can defuse conflicts, build relationships, and foster unity. Our words have the power to bring encouragement or discouragement, to uplift or tear down, and as leaders, we should choose our words wisely.
  • Lasting Influence: The elders advised Rehoboam that if he served the people and responded positively to their request, they would serve him forever. This emphasizes the principle that leaders who genuinely care for and serve those they lead will earn their loyalty and respect. It is a reminder that leadership is not about the leader’s personal gain but about the well‑being of those they lead.

Application:

  • Attitude of Humility:As leaders or in any position of influence, we should adopt an attitude of humility and servanthood. By genuinely caring for others and meeting their needs, we can build strong relationships and foster loyalty.
  • Wise Words:We should recognize the power of our words and use them wisely. By speaking kind and gracious words, we can bring encouragement, healing, and unity to those around us.
  • Leadership Impact:Understanding the lasting impact of our leadership is crucial. By focusing on the well‑being of those we lead rather than our own interests, we can create a positive and lasting influence that brings unity, support, and growth.
  • Seeking Counsel:Rehoboam’s failure to heed the advice of the elders led to disastrous consequences. It is essential for leaders to seek counsel from wise and experienced individuals, enabling them to make informed and wise decisions.

Remember, studying and applying the principles from the Bible can help us grow in our personal lives and our relationships with others.
