1 Kings 13:20
And it came to passe as they sate at the table, that the word of the Lord came vnto the prophet that brought him backe: 1 Kings 13:20 (KJV)
The narrative of 1 Kings 13 tells of an unnamed prophet who was sent by God to deliver a specific warning to King Jeroboam of Israel. He was explicitly commanded not to eat or drink anything in the land, and not to return by the same way he had come. After faithfully delivering the message, the man of God began his journey home, trusting that he had obeyed the Lord’s instruction.
Verse 20 records a pivotal moment: while the prophet was sitting at the table eating and drinking, an old prophet from Bethel came along the road and called out to him. The old prophet invited the man of God to “come, sit down with me, that day, and eat, and drink.” At that very instant the word of the LORD came to the old prophet, who cried out, warning the man of God that because he had disobeyed the LORD’s command—eating bread and drinking water in the place where the LORD had said, “Eat no bread, and drink no water”—his corpse would not be buried with his fathers. This encounter shows that the prophet’s journey was not yet complete and that God still had important communication for him.
The episode teaches several key truths. First, obedience to God’s instructions is essential; the prophet’s initial faithfulness was commendable, yet he was cautioned against complacency and assuming his mission was finished. Second, divine interruptions can occur at unexpected moments, urging believers to remain open to God’s voice even when plans seem settled. Third, God’s timing and purpose are not limited by human circumstances; the old prophet’s approach while the man of God was eating illustrates that God may reveal His will in the most ordinary settings. The encounter reminds us that we must always be attentive and responsive to God’s leading, ready to listen and obey regardless of the timing or context.
