“And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.”

Context:The passage is set during the reign of King Jeroboam in the divided kingdom of Israel. Jeroboam had led the northern kingdom of Israel into idolatry, and God sent a prophet from Judah to prophesy against the altar of Bethel.

Importance of Obedience:In the preceding verses, God commanded the prophet not to eat or drink anything in the foreign land and not to return by the same way he came. However, a certain old prophet deceived the man of God, claiming that an angel had instructed him to invite the prophet to his house for a meal. The man of God obeyed the command of the old prophet, which ultimately led to his demise.

Lesson: This passage highlights the importance of obedience to God’s specific instructions. The man of God’s disobedence resulted in severe consequences. It serves as a reminder for believers to carefully discern God’s voice and remain faithful to His commands, even in the face of temptation or pressure from others.

Discernment and Testing:The old prophet’s intent is questioned in this verse. He asks the man of God if he is indeed the person sent by God from Judah. The man of God truthfully affirms his identity.

Lesson: The encounter between the man of God and the old prophet underscores the need for discernment and testing. We should be cautious and discerning, especially when someone claims to speak on behalf of God. Testing the spirits and seeking confirmation through prayer, Scripture, and seeking wise counsel are crucial in distinguishing true messengers of God from false ones.

The Certainty of the Man of God’s Response:When asked if he is the man of God, the prophet confidently affirms, “I am.” His response reflects his confidence in his identity and calling.

Lesson: The man of God’s confident response illustrates the importance of knowing who we are in Christ and having assurance in our calling. As believers, we should be secure in our identity as children of God and confidently fulfill the purposes and assignments God has given us.

Fulfilled Prophecy:This verse highlights the fulfillment of the prophetic word. The encounter between the man of God and the old prophet confirms that God’s word will come to pass.

Lesson: The fulfillment of prophecy emphasizes the trustworthiness and faithfulness of God. It reminds us to rely on God’s promises and trust that His word will be fulfilled, even in challenging circumstances.

Overall, 1 Kings 13:14 teaches us valuable lessons about the importance of obedience, discernment, and the certainty of our identity in Christ. It also emphasises the fulfilment of God’s word.
