1 Kings 14:18

Listen to this article

And they buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the Lord, which hee spake by the hand of his seruant Ahiiah the Prophet. 1 Kings 14:18 (KJV)

Context: To understand this verse better, let’s first establish the context. This verse is part of a passage that describes the reign of King Jeroboam of Israel. Jeroboam had turned away from following God’s commandments and led the people of Israel into idolatry. As a result, God pronounced judgment upon his house and declared that they would be cut off from the land.

Burial: The verse begins with the phrase, “And they buried him.” This refers to the burial of Jeroboam’s son, Abijah, who had fallen ill. Despite his father’s disobedience, Abijah receives a proper burial, as was customary in Israelite culture. This emphasizes the fact that God’s judgment is not immediate but is often delayed.

Mourning: The verse goes on to state that “all Israel mourned for him.” Despite the sinful actions of Jeroboam and his family, the people of Israel express their sorrow and grief at the death of Abijah. This shows the capacity of the Israelites to empathize and mourn for their fellow countrymen, regardless of their leaders’ wrongdoing.

Word of the LORD: The verse further highlights that the mourning of the people was “according to the word of the LORD.” Here, it refers to the prophecy spoken by Ahijah, God’s servant, concerning the judgment that would come upon Jeroboam’s house. This shows that God’s word is fulfilled, even in the midst of sorrow and mourning.

Ahijah the Prophet: The verse concludes by mentioning Ahijah, the prophet through whom God communicated His message. Ahijah had foretold the demise of Jeroboam’s family because of their idolatry and disobedience. The fact that the prophecy came true demonstrates the authority and reliability of God’s word through His chosen messengers.

Overall, 1 Kings 14:18 highlights the consequences of Jeroboam’s actions and the fulfilment of God’s word through the prophet Ahijah. It also serves as a reminder that God’s judgment may be delayed, but it will ultimately come to pass. Furthermore, it shows the compassionate response of the people of Israel, who mourned the death of Abijah, despite the sinful nature of his family’s reign.
