1 Kings 15:2

Listen to this article

Three yeeres reigned hee in Ierusalem: and his mothers name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom. 1 Kings 15:2 (KJV)

To better understand the significance of this verse, we first consider its context. The passage belongs to the historical account of the kings of Israel and Judah and specifically records the reign of Abijam, also called Abijah, over the kingdom of Judah. Abijam was the son of Rehoboam and the grandson of Solomon, placing him firmly within the Davidic line.

According to the verse, Abijam reigned in Jerusalem for three years. His brief reign was marked by ongoing warfare with the northern kingdom of Israel, which at that time was ruled by Jeroboam. Despite the short duration of his rule, the biblical narrative notes that Abijam walked in the sins of his father Rehoboam and failed to fully follow the ways of the Lord, a judgment echoed in the following verse, 1 Kings 15:3.

The verse also identifies Abijam’s mother as Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom. It is important to note that Abishalom is a variant of the name Absalom, the son of David whose life is recorded in 2 Samuel, and that this Abishalom is distinct from the more familiar Absalom of David’s story. The Bible does not provide further details about Abishalom’s identity or about Maachah’s lineage, though the name connects her to this well‑known biblical figure.

In summary, 1 Kings 15:2 gives us a concise snapshot of a turbulent period in Judah’s history: a young king with a brief, conflict‑ridden reign, a lineage tied to the great house of David, and a mother whose family background remains largely obscure in the scriptural record. This concise information invites the reader to reflect on the fleeting nature of earthly power and the importance of faithful obedience to God, even amid political instability.
