1 Kings 17:10

Listen to this article

So he arose, and went to Zarephath: and when he came to the gate of the citie, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of stickes: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessell, that I may drinke. 1 Kings 17:10 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative of the prophet Elijah during a time of drought and famine in the land of Israel. In the preceding verses, Elijah had been hiding by the brook Cherith, where God provided him with water from the brook and commanded ravens to bring him bread and meat. However, when the brook eventually dried up due to the prolonged drought, God instructed Elijah to go to Zarephath, where He had commanded a widow to provide for him.

In verse 10, we see Elijah’s obedience to God’s command as he arrives at the gate of Zarephath. There, he encounters a widow woman who is gathering sticks, likely in preparation to cook a meal for herself and her son. Elijah calls out to her and asks her for a little water in a vessel to drink.

This verse highlights a few significant points:

Divine Guidance: Elijah’s journey to Zarephath was not a mere coincidence but a result of God’s specific instructions. It demonstrates that God can guide His servants to the right place at the right time to fulfill His purposes.

Obedience: Elijah immediately obeys God’s command without hesitation. His willingness to follow God’s guidance serves as an example of faith and trust in the divine leading.

God’s Provision: God had already arranged for the widow to provide for Elijah’s needs. Even though the widow herself was in a dire situation, God intended to use her to sustain His prophet during the famine. This verse reminds us that God can use unexpected means and people to meet our needs in times of difficulty.

Hospitality and Generosity: In asking the widow for water, Elijah displays humility and dependence on others. Additionally, by requesting water from the widow, he initiates an interaction that eventually leads to a greater demonstration of God’s provision and the widow’s faith.

The subsequent verses reveal the widow’s response to Elijah’s request and God’s miraculous provision of sustenance for her household during the famine. This story serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness, provision, and His ability to work through ordinary individuals to accomplish extraordinary things.
