1 Kings 17:8

Listen to this article

“And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,”

This verse marks the beginning of a significant story in the life of the prophet Elijah. Prior to this verse, Elijah had delivered a message from God to King Ahab, declaring a drought upon the land as a consequence of Israel’s disobedience. After delivering the message, God commanded Elijah to leave and hide himself by the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan River. There, Elijah was miraculously sustained by ravens who brought him bread and meat.

Now, in verse 8, we find that the word of the Lord came to Elijah once again. This phrase indicates that God initiated communication with the prophet, speaking directly to him. The fact that God continued to speak to Elijah demonstrates the intimate relationship between the Lord and His chosen servant.

Continuing on to the next verses, we read:

“Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee” (1 Kings 17:9, KJV).

In this command, God directs Elijah to leave his place of hiding and go to Zarephath, a city belonging to the region of Sidon. It is interesting to note that Zarephath was a Gentile city outside of Israel, which adds significance to this account.

God further reveals that He has commanded a widow in Zarephath to provide sustenance for Elijah. This is a remarkable instruction because widows were typically vulnerable and dependent on the support of others. However, the Lord chooses this widow as an instrument of His provision.

The story continues as Elijah obeys the word of the Lord and arrives in Zarephath. There he encounters the widow and makes a request for food and water. Although she initially expresses her desperate situation with only a handful of flour and a little oil remaining, Elijah assures her that the Lord will miraculously multiply her resources, sustaining her and her household during the ongoing drought.

This story showcases God’s faithfulness to His prophet and His ability to provide in extraordinary ways. It also highlights the theme of obedience, as Elijah follows God’s commands, even when they seem unconventional or challenging. Additionally, it emphasizes God’s care for the vulnerable and His desire to involve ordinary people in fulfilling His plans.

As we reflect on 1 Kings 17:8, we can draw several lessons from this passage. Firstly, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating a close relationship with God and being attentive to His voice. Elijah’s obedience was a result of his consistent communication with God.

Secondly, this verse demonstrates God’s ability to provide for His people, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. The widow’s story is a powerful testimony of God’s supernatural provision when we trust and obey Him.

Lastly, this passage encourages us to trust in God’s wisdom and guidance. His plans may lead us to unexpected places or involve unlikely individuals, but His purposes are always perfect and will ultimately bring about His glory.

In summary:1 Kings 17:8 marks the beginning of a remarkable story in the life of Elijah, illustrating God’s faithfulness, provision, and the importance of obedience.
