1 Kings 18:34

And hee said, Doe it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Doe it the third time. And they did it the third time. 1 Kings 18:34 (KJV)

“And he said, Pour water upon the offering, and lay it again: and they poured much water upon the offering.” This verse belongs to the dramatic confrontation on Mount Carmel between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal. Elijah challenged the Baal worshippers to demonstrate the power of their god by preparing a sacrifice and calling on their deity to consume it with fire. In response, Elijah instructed the prophets of Baal to pour water over the offering three times, after which he would call on the Lord to send fire.

The act of pouring water three times carries deep symbolism. First, it makes the task of producing fire seemingly impossible; water extinguishes fire, so the more water poured, the harder it would be for any fire to appear. This highlights the futility of the false god they served. Second, the repeated pouring sets the stage for a spectacular display of God’s supremacy, as the true God would later ignite the drenched sacrifice, proving His power over all elements.

Several lessons emerge for believers today. The significance of obedience is evident: Elijah’s instruction was unusual and appeared counter‑productive, yet the prophets of Baal obeyed, demonstrating that faithful obedience may sometimes require actions beyond human logic. Their obedience, however, underscores the emptiness of false gods; despite their earnest prayers, no fire came, reminding us that trust placed in anything other than the living God leads to disappointment. Finally, the passage showcases God’s power and glory. When Elijah prayed, fire fell from heaven and consumed the water‑soaked offering, confirming that no circumstance is too difficult for the Almighty.

Application: As we meditate on this narrative, we are called to trust and obey God even when His directions seem illogical. We must guard against placing our confidence in worldly idols or philosophies, recognizing that only the Lord can satisfy fully. Moreover, we can draw comfort from the assurance that God can accomplish the extraordinary in our lives, doing far more than we can imagine or request (Ephesians 3:20). Continual study of Scripture deepens our understanding and strengthens our faith as we grow in relationship with the true God.
