1 Kings 18:8

Listen to this article

And he answered him, I am: goe, tell thy lord, Behold, Eliiah is here. 1 Kings 18:8 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the narrative of the prophet Elijah’s encounter with Obadiah during a time of severe drought and spiritual apostasy in the kingdom of Israel. God had commanded Elijah to present himself to King Ahab, and Ahab sent Obadiah to search for the prophet. When Obadiah, a devout servant of God who had protected many prophets during Jezebel’s persecution, finally found Elijah, he expressed concern that the prophet might vanish before he could relay his location to the king. Elijah answered, “I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here,” reassuring Obadiah that he was present and ready to face Ahab.

Obadiah’s role was crucial; his faithful service enabled the meeting that would set the stage for the decisive confrontation on Mount Carmel. Elijah’s response demonstrates his obedience to God’s command and his willingness to confront the spiritual crisis confronting Israel, despite the personal risks involved. The instruction to “go, tell thy lord” serves as a proclamation of Elijah’s boldness and confidence in God’s power, signaling the imminent showdown between the true God of Israel and the false gods worshipped by the prophets of Baal.

Key themes highlighted in this passage include faithfulness, divine providence, and God’s sovereignty. Elijah’s presence at this moment is a direct response to divine direction, illustrating God’s providential care in preserving the prophet until the appointed time. The verse underscores Elijah’s courage and steadfastness, revealing that God’s sovereignty governs the events leading to the dramatic revelation of His power before the people of Israel and the false prophets. Overall, 1 Kings 18:8 demonstrates Elijah’s obedience to God’s call and his readiness to confront Israel’s spiritual crisis head‑on, affirming the enduring truth of God’s faithful provision and sovereign authority.
