1 Kings 2:28

Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

1 Kings 2:28 (KJV)

Joab, commander of David’s army, heard that Adonijah had been executed and Abiathar removed from office. He had supported Adonijah’s bid for the throne, though he had not joined Absalom’s earlier rebellion. Aware of his guilt, Joab fled to the tabernacle and seized the horns of the altar, a recognized place of asylum in Israel.

The horns were projections at the altar’s four corners, and grasping them was a plea for mercy. Joab’s flight reveals his fear and his knowledge that backing Adonijah was treason against Solomon, God’s chosen king. Yet his action exposes a deeper issue: he sought safety in a sacred place without true repentance for his past murders, including the killing of Abner and Uriah. His life, though marked by loyalty to David, was also stained by violence and disobedience.

Solomon later ordered Benaiah to strike Joab down even at the altar, fulfilling David’s charge and executing justice for Joab’s bloodshed (1 Kings 2:5-6, 28-34). This shows that asylum was not absolute. The altar could not shield a guilty man from the consequences of deliberate sin. The narrative demonstrates that outward religious acts cannot hide a heart that remains unrepentant.

Joab’s example warns us not to trust outward religious acts to cover unconfessed sin. We may attend church, pray, or cling to sacred symbols, but God looks at the heart. True refuge is found only in repentance and faith in Christ, the appointed King, not in rituals or places. Wholehearted loyalty to God’s anointed deliverer is the only safe path.

Where do we run when we have done wrong? Do we hide behind religious activity, or do we humbly confess and turn to God? Joab’s end reminds us that divine justice is certain, but mercy is available to those who sincerely seek it through God’s anointed deliverer.
