1 Kings 21:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:20

And set two men, sonnes of Belial before him, to beare witnes against him, saying, Thou diddest blaspheme God and the king: and then carie him out, and stone him that he may die. 1 Kings 21:10 (KJV)

Context: Before we dive into the specific verse, it is important to understand the background of 1 Kings 21. The chapter tells the story of Naboth’s vineyard. King Ahab coveted the vineyard, but Naboth refused to sell it because it was his ancestral inheritance. Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, devised a scheme to have Naboth falsely accused and stoned so that Ahab could take possession of the land.

The verse records Jezebel’s plan: she set two “sons of Belial” before Naboth to bear false witness, accusing him of blaspheming God and the king, and then ordered that he be carried out and stoned to death. This illustrates her manipulation of the judicial system and her willingness to use deceit and murder to achieve her husband’s desires.

Jezebel’s actions directly violate God’s commandments. She bore false witness, breaking the command “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16). She also orchestrated murder, contravening “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Her conduct exemplifies the corruption that results when power is abused for personal gain.

Although the verse does not detail the outcome, Scripture records that both Jezebel and Ahab faced severe divine judgment. God pronounced disaster on Ahab’s household (1 Kings 21:21‑24), and later the books of Kings record the deaths of both Ahab and Jezebel as the fulfillment of that judgment.

The passage serves as a cautionary tale. It warns believers of the dangers of deceit, manipulation, and the abuse of authority. As followers of Christ we are called to pursue justice, love our neighbors, and resist the corrupting influence of power.

Finally, the verse reminds us that God sees all wrongdoing. While the wicked may appear to prosper temporarily, God’s justice ultimately prevails. The story of Ahab and Jezebel underscores that divine judgment will come upon those who engage in wickedness and injustice.
