1 Kings 21:24
Him that dieth of Ahab in the citie, the dogs shall eate: and him that dieth in the field, shall the foules of the aire eat. 1 Kings 21:24 (KJV)
This verse is part of a prophecy delivered by the prophet Elijah to King Ahab of Israel. To understand the context, we need to look at the events leading up to it. In the preceding verses, we learn about a man named Naboth who owned a vineyard near the palace of King Ahab in Jezreel. Ahab desired to have Naboth’s vineyard for himself, but Naboth refused to sell it because it was an inheritance passed down through his family. Ahab was upset and sullen because of this rejection. Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, saw his distress and devised a plan to help him obtain the vineyard. She arranged a false accusation against Naboth, leading to his execution. Ahab then took possession of the vineyard. After these events, the prophet Elijah confronted Ahab, pronouncing God’s judgment upon him and his household.
“The dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.” “And the dogs shall eat them that die of him in the city; and the fowls shall eat them that die of him in the field.”
The verse in question, 1 Kings 21:24, contains Elijah’s prophecy. It declares that Jezebel will be eaten by dogs in Jezreel, those associated with Ahab who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be devoured by the birds of the air. This prophecy reflects God’s judgment against Ahab for his wickedness and his involvement in the unjust acquisition of Naboth’s vineyard. It emphasizes the severity of the punishment that awaits Ahab and his family. The imagery of being eaten by dogs and birds underscores the disgrace and humiliation that will fall upon them.
This prophecy was fulfilled when Ahab died in battle, and his blood was licked up by dogs, as recorded in 1 Kings 22:38. It is worth noting that this prophecy was fulfilled later in 1 Kings 22:38‑40, where Ahab died in battle and his blood was licked up by dogs, just as Elijah had foretold. Additionally, Jezebel’s fate was fulfilled in 2 Kings 9:36-37, where dogs consumed her flesh in Jezreel.
This served as a reminder of God’s justice and the consequences of disobedience. Overall, 1 Kings 21:24 serves as a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty and the accountability of individuals, even kings, for their actions. It also highlights the importance of integrity and the consequences of seeking personal gain through unjust means.
