1 Kings 22:16

Listen to this article

“And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the Lord?”

This verse is part of the account of a significant event in the life of King Ahab of Israel. To understand the verse better, let’s provide some context:

Context:During the reign of King Ahab, the nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Ahab was the king of the northern kingdom, while Jehoshaphat was the king of the southern kingdom.

At the time, Ahab desired to retake Ramoth Gilead, a city that had previously belonged to Israel but was now under Syrian control. Ahab sought Jehoshaphat’s assistance in this military campaign. Jehoshaphat agreed, but before going into battle, he suggested inquiring of the Lord for guidance.

Ahab summoned his prophets, about four hundred of them, who prophesied success in the battle and urged Ahab to go forward. However, Jehoshaphat inquired if there was a prophet of the Lord they could consult. Ahab mentioned Micaiah, but added that he hated him because Micaiah never prophesied anything good concerning Ahab, only evil.

Despite Ahab’s reluctance, Micaiah was summoned. Prior to Micaiah’s arrival, one of Ahab’s prophets had made iron horns and declared that they represented the horns of victory against the Syrians. Ahab and Jehoshaphat were seated, each on his throne, and the prophets were prophesying before them.

Verse Analysis:In 1 Kings 22:16, Ahab addresses Micaiah after he arrives and expresses frustration with him. Ahab’s question, “How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the Lord?” reveals Ahab’s knowledge that Micaiah has a habit of prophesying unfavorable outcomes.

Ahab’s statement shows that he wanted Micaiah to speak truthfully in the name of the Lord. However, it is essential to note that Ahab’s request is somewhat ironic because he has consistently disregarded or rejected the true prophetic messages in the past, especially those that went against his desires.

The irony lies in the fact that Ahab, despite his previous disregard for God’s prophets, still acknowledges that the words spoken in the name of the Lord are true. It indicates a recognition of the authority and power of God’s word, even though Ahab had chosen to ignore it in the past.

This verse highlights the conflict between Ahab’s desire for favorable prophecies and the reality that God’s word is not always pleasant or in alignment with our desires. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking and embracing the truth, even if it challenges our preconceived notions or goes against our wishes.

Overall, 1 Kings 22:16 is a powerful verse that underscores the significance of truth, the authority of God’s word, and the need for sincere discernment when seeking guidance and prophetic insight.
