1 Kings 22:44
And Iehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel. 1 Kings 22:44 (KJV)
The verse 1 Kings 22:44 records that Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, made peace with the king of Israel. To grasp its significance, we must view it within the broader narrative of 1 Kings 22. In that chapter the wicked king Ahab of Israel and the righteous king Jehoshaphat of Judah join forces to wage war against the kingdom of Aram (Syria). Before the battle, Jehoshaphat asks to hear the counsel of a true prophet of the Lord. Ahab complies by gathering about four hundred prophets who all proclaim victory. Yet Jehoshaphat insists on hearing from a genuine prophet, and the Lord’s servant Micaiah is brought before the two kings.
Micaiah first repeats the optimistic words of the other prophets, but then he reveals a vision of the heavenly court. In that vision a spirit volunteers to entice Ahab to go into battle, promising him success, but the spirit’s purpose is to bring Ahab to his doom. Micaiah warns that the favorable prophecy of the other prophets is a deceptive spirit sent by God to lead Ahab to destruction. Ahab rejects Micaiah’s warning and proceeds with his plan.
The battle that follows is fierce. Ahab disguises himself, yet a random arrow strikes him, mortally wounding him. He dies and is taken back to Samaria. In contrast, Jehoshaphat escapes the conflict unharmed. After these events the record in 1 Kings 22:44 notes that Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel, indicating a restoration of stability between Judah and Israel following the turmoil of war and the tragic end of Ahab.
