1 Kings 22:49

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

Then said Ahaziah the sonne of Ahab vnto Iehoshaphat, Let my seruants goe with thy seruants in the ships: But Iehoshaphat would not. 1 Kings 22:49 (KJV)

In this verse, we find Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, speaking to Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, regarding a proposal to build ships together at Ezion‑geber. This occurs during the joint military campaign of Israel and Judah against the king of Syria at Ramoth‑Gilead, where Ahaziah requests that his servants be allowed to travel on the ships with Jehoshaphat’s servants.

Key Points and Lessons:

Alliance with the ungodly: This verse highlights the issue of forming alliances with those who do not follow God’s ways. Jehoshaphat was a righteous king who sought the Lord, while Ahaziah was the son of Ahab, a wicked king who led Israel into idolatry. Jehoshaphat’s later decision to refuse participation in the battle suggests a desire to avoid compromising his faith and exposing his people to ungodly influences.

Discernment in relationships: Jehoshaphat’s refusal shows the importance of discernment in our relationships. As believers, we should carefully consider the company we keep, avoiding partnerships or friendships that may lead us away from God’s will or compromise our faith. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Prioritizing godly principles: Jehoshaphat’s choice to uphold godly principles over political expediency teaches the importance of staying true to our convictions and prioritizing obedience to God’s Word. While it may have seemed advantageous to Ahaziah to have the support of Judah’s servants, Jehoshaphat chose to align himself with God’s ways instead of compromising his integrity.

Seeking God’s guidance: This episode also serves as a reminder to seek God’s guidance and wisdom in decision‑making. It is evident that Jehoshaphat sought the Lord’s counsel before making his decision, recognizing the potential dangers of aligning with Ahaziah. In our own lives, we should always seek God’s direction through prayer and studying His Word, allowing His wisdom to guide our choices.

Application: This passage encourages us to carefully evaluate our alliances and relationships, ensuring that they align with godly principles. We should seek discernment and wisdom from the Lord, asking for guidance when making decisions that may have spiritual implications. Let us prioritize our relationship with God, remaining steadfast in our faith and avoiding compromises that may lead us astray.

Overall, 1 Kings 22‑49‑50 reminds us to be cautious about the company we keep and to prioritize our commitment to God above all else.
