And I haue also giuen thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the Kings like vnto thee, all thy dayes. 1 Kings 3:13 (KJV)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)

Here is a Bible study on 1 Kings 3:13, part of the narrative of King Solomon’s encounter with God at Gibeon, where Solomon had gone to offer sacrifices to the Lord. During this encounter God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered to give him whatever he asked for.

Solomon’s Request: In 1 Kings 3:5‑9 Solomon humbly acknowledges his need for wisdom and discernment to govern God’s people. He asks for an understanding heart or a wise and discerning mind to rule the people of Israel effectively and make righteous judgments.

God’s Response: In 1 Kings 3:10‑14 God commends Solomon for not asking for long life, wealth, or the destruction of his enemies, and notes that his desire for wisdom pleases Him. God grants Solomon’s request and promises to give him a wise and discerning heart like no other before him or after him. Moreover, God also promises Solomon riches, honour, and a great, enduring kingdom if he walks in His ways and keeps His commandments.

Lessons from the Passage:

The Value of Wisdom – Solomon’s request for wisdom reveals the significance of seeking godly wisdom in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than wealth, fame, or power because it enables us to make righteous decisions and lead others in a manner that pleases God.

Humility and Priorities – Solomon’s humble request and his focus on serving God’s people rather than personal gain teach us the importance of humility and seeking God’s purposes above our own desires. When we prioritise God’s will and seek His wisdom, He blesses us beyond what we can imagine.

The Nature of God – God’s response demonstrates His character as a generous and loving God. He rewards Solomon’s humble request with wisdom and promises additional blessings if Solomon remains faithful, revealing God’s desire to bless His people when they align their desires with His will.

Application:

Seek God’s Wisdom – Just as Solomon sought wisdom from God, we should also seek divine wisdom through prayer, studying God’s Word, and seeking godly counsel, so that we may grow in wisdom and make sound decisions that honour God.

Humble Ourselves – Like Solomon, we must approach God with humility, acknowledging our dependence on Him. When we set aside selfish ambitions and seek God’s purposes, He can use us mightily for His kingdom.

Align with God’s Will – Solomon’s request pleased God because it aligned with His will and demonstrated a desire to fulfil God’s purposes. Likewise, when we seek God’s wisdom we should strive to align our lives with His will, walking in obedience to His commandments.

1 Kings 3:13 serves as an inspiring example of how God responds to those who seek wisdom, humility, and a desire to serve Him faithfully. It reminds us of the importance of prioritising God’s will and seeking His wisdom in all aspects of our lives.
