1 Kings 3:7

Listen to this article

“And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.”

Context:First Kings 3:7 is part of the account of Solomon’s early reign as the king of Israel. Solomon had just become king after the death of his father, David. In this verse, Solomon expresses his humility and acknowledges his need for God’s wisdom to govern the people of Israel.

Solomon’s humility:Despite being chosen as king and having immense power and authority, Solomon humbly refers to himself as a “little child.” This shows his recognition of his own limitations and his dependence on God’s guidance and wisdom. Solomon understands that he needs divine help to fulfill his responsibilities as king effectively.

Acknowledging God’s sovereignty:Solomon acknowledges that it is God who made him king instead of his father, David. This demonstrates Solomon’s awareness that his position of authority is not solely based on his own merits or abilities but is a result of God’s choice and divine intervention. Solomon’s acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty sets the foundation for his request for wisdom.

Seeking wisdom:Solomon expresses his lack of knowledge and understanding by saying, “I know not how to go out or come in.” This phrase signifies his recognition of the weighty responsibility of leading a nation and making wise decisions. Solomon understands that he needs wisdom to govern the people effectively and fulfill his role as king.

Application:Solomon’s humility and desire for wisdom provide us with important lessons. We should recognise our limitations and dependence on God’s guidance in all aspects of our lives. Like Solomon, we can approach God with humility and seek His wisdom to navigate challenges and make wise decisions. We can trust that God, who is the source of all wisdom, will provide us with the understanding and discernment we need.
