Ahimaaz was in Naphtali; he also tooke Basmath the daughter of Solomon to wife. 1 Kings 4:15 (KJV)

“And Solomon reigned over all Israel.” 1 Kings 4:15 provides a brief mention of Ahimaaz, one of the twelve officials who served in King Solomon’s administration. The verse specifically highlights Ahimaaz’s marriage to Basmath, who was the daughter of Solomon. In the preceding verses the passage lists the various officials appointed by Solomon to help administer the affairs of his kingdom, assigning each to a different region; Ahimaaz was assigned to the region of Naphtali. Solomon’s administration was known for its wisdom and efficiency, and the selection and organization of these officials showcased his desire for effective governance and his ability to delegate responsibilities to capable individuals. By mentioning Ahimaaz’s marriage to Basmath, the verse underscores the interconnectedness between the political and social aspects of Solomon’s reign. From a broader biblical perspective the verse also demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s promise to bless Solomon with prosperity and abundance. Earlier in 1 Kings God granted Solomon great wisdom, wealth, and honor because Solomon asked for wisdom to govern the people of Israel (1 Kings 3:9‑14). The mention of Ahimaaz’s marriage reflects the continuation of God’s blessings on Solomon’s reign. The passage also reminds us of the importance of family and marriage within the biblical narrative; marriage was highly valued in the Old Testament and it was customary for influential individuals to marry strategically, often to form alliances or strengthen existing relationships. While the verse does not provide extensive details about Basmath, her inclusion suggests her significance within Solomon’s administration and the wider royal family. Overall, 1 Kings 4:15 highlights the organization and administration of King Solomon’s reign, the intertwining of political and social life, and serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and the significance of marriage in the biblical story.
