1 Kings 7:39

Posted on 18 May at 11:35

“And he put five bases on the right side of the house, and five on the left side of the house: and he set the sea on the right side of the house eastward over against the south.”

Context:Solomon’s Temple was an extraordinary structure built during the reign of King Solomon in Jerusalem. It was a magnificent testament to the grandeur and splendor of God’s dwelling place on earth. The temple housed the Ark of the Covenant and served as a center for worship and sacrifice.

Bases:The verse mentions “bases” or “pedestals” that were placed on the right and left sides of the temple. These bases served as supports for the bronze furnishings within the temple.

Symbolism of Five:The number five in biblical numerology often symbolizes God’s grace and favor. In this context, the five bases on both sides of the temple represent the divine order and symmetry in the design. They signify the stability and firm foundation of God’s dwelling place.

The Sea:The verse mentions “the sea” placed on the right side of the temple, facing eastward towards the south. The “sea” refers to a large basin or laver made of cast bronze. It was used by the priests for ceremonial washing and purification.

Symbolism of the Sea:The “sea” holds symbolic significance in the temple. It represents both physical and spiritual cleansing. In the Old Testament, water was often associated with purification and renewal. The placement of the sea on the right side of the temple signifies its importance and prominence in the worship and service of God.

Overall, 1 Kings 7:39 provides a glimpse into the detailed construction of Solomon’s Temple. It highlights the meticulous planning and craftsmanship involved in creating a place of worship. Symbolically, it emphasizes the stability, grace, and purification that were integral to the temple’s purpose.
