1 Kings 7:43

Posted on 10 Feb at 22:17

And the ten bases, and ten lauers on the bases. 1 Kings 7:43 (KJV)

This verse is part of a description of the items made by King Solomon for the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. The previous verses in 1 Kings 7 provide a detailed account of the furnishings and decorations of the temple. In this passage, it mentions “ten bases” and “ten lavers on the bases.” These bases and lavers were part of the temple’s bronze furnishings, constructed according to precise specifications. They were essential for religious rituals performed at the temple. A “base” refers to a stand or pedestal that supports another object, and in the temple context, these bases served as supports for the lavers. A “laver” is a large basin used for washing or purification rituals, placed atop the bases for ceremonial use by priests. The number ten indicates the quantity of bases and lavers prepared for the temple, emphasizing the completeness and precision of Solomon’s construction. While this verse may not convey an overt spiritual or moral message, it highlights the attention to detail and commitment to fulfilling God’s instructions in building the temple. The construction was a significant undertaking, executed with great care to create a place of worship and reverence for God. Overall, this verse underscores the intricate preparations and attention to detail in Old Testament temple worship, reflecting the importance of proper reverence and dedication in approaching God. These ten sets together formed a complete system for the priests to perform purification rites, illustrating the thoroughness of the sanctuary’s design. In this way the passage reminds readers that reverence for God is expressed not only in worship but also in the meticulous care given to the instruments of worship.
