1 Kings 8:15
And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which spake with his mouth unto David my father, and hath with his hand fulfilled it, saying,
1 Kings 8:15 (KJV)
Context
1 Kings 8 records the dedication of the temple that King Solomon built in Jerusalem. The ark of the covenant had been brought into the most holy place, and the glory of the Lord filled the house. In this setting, Solomon stands before the people and blesses the Lord God of Israel. His words open the prayer of dedication and set the tone for the entire ceremony.
Solomon speaks of God’s promise to David his father. The Lord had said that David’s son would build a house for His name. Now Solomon sees that promise completed. The temple stands as visible proof that God keeps His word.
Meaning
Solomon declares that God “spake with his mouth” and “hath with his hand fulfilled it.” These two phrases contrast God’s promise and His performance. What God speaks, He also accomplishes. His word is not empty; His power brings it to pass. The verse emphasizes the certainty of God’s faithfulness.
Solomon’s blessing is an act of worship. He does not take credit for the temple. Instead, he praises God, who both promised and enabled the work. This teaches that every faithful act in our lives ultimately flows from God’s initiative and strength.
Biblical connections
The promise to David is recorded in 2 Samuel 7:12-16. There God assured David that his offspring would sit on the throne and that his house and kingdom would endure forever. Solomon’s temple was a partial fulfillment of that promise. The greater fulfillment came in Jesus Christ, who reigns on David’s throne eternally.
Solomon’s words also echo the pattern of praise found throughout Scripture. When God fulfills His covenant, His people respond with blessing and thanksgiving. This verse models that response.
Application
God’s faithfulness to David and Solomon encourages us to trust His promises today. He does not forget what He has said. We can rely on His word even when circumstances seem uncertain.
Trust God’s promises: He is faithful to complete what He has begun.
Acknowledge His blessings: Like Solomon, we should praise God for His provision and guidance.
Build a spiritual temple: Our lives can become places where God’s presence dwells through prayer, worship, and obedience.
Reflection
Solomon’s praise reminds us that God’s word and God’s work always agree. When we see answered prayer or fulfilled promises, we should bless the Lord. His faithfulness in the past gives us confidence for the future. Let us respond with grateful hearts, knowing that the God who spoke to David still speaks and still fulfills His word.
