1 Kings 8:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:20

And the Lord hath perfourmed his word that he spake, and I am risen vp in the roume of Dauid my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and haue built an House for the Name of the Lord God of Israel. 1 Kings 8:20 (KJV)

King Solomon addresses the people of Israel during the dedication of the newly constructed temple in Jerusalem. 1 Kings 8 records the culmination of Solomon’s efforts in building the temple of the Lord, beginning with the grand procession of the ark of the covenant being brought into the Holy of Holies and followed by Solomon’s prayer of dedication. In his prayer Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness, promises, and covenant with the nation of Israel.

The verse highlights the fulfillment of God’s word. Throughout the Old Testament God made numerous covenants and promises to His people, including the promise to David of a descendant who would establish an everlasting kingdom (2 Samuel 7:12‑16). Solomon declares that the Lord has performed the promises He spoke, and the completion of the temple demonstrates that faithfulness.

Solomon also affirms his role as king. He recognizes that he has taken the place of his father David and now sits on the throne of Israel, emphasizing the continuity of God’s promises and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty.

He further declares that he has built a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. The temple serves as the central place of worship where the presence of God dwelt among His people, providing a suitable dwelling for God’s name to be honored.

The passage also records God’s own declaration that He will dwell among the children of Israel and be their God, underscoring the significance of the temple as the place where God’s presence would reside.

As believers today we are described as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). The dedication of the temple reminds us to recognize and honor God’s presence in our hearts and lives, seeking to worship Him sincerely as He dwells within us.
