1 Kings 8:66

“On the eighth day he sent the people away: and they blessed the king, and went unto their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the LORD had done for David his servant, and for Israel his people.”

Context: This verse takes place at the dedication of the Temple built by King Solomon. The ark of the covenant had been brought into the Temple, Solomon prayed a powerful prayer of dedication, and offerings were made. The celebration lasted seven days, and on the eighth day Solomon dismissed the people.

“On the eighth day he sent the people away” The dedication celebration had been completed. The number eight in Scripture often symbolizes a new beginning. After worship and dedication, the people return home renewed.

“They blessed the king” The people expressed gratitude to Solomon. Though the Temple was built for God, they recognized Solomon’s leadership and obedience in completing it.

“Went unto their tents joyful and glad of heart” True worship produces joy. Their happiness was not just emotional excitement—it was deep gladness rooted in what God had done.

“For all the goodness that the LORD had done” The focus is not ultimately on Solomon, but on the LORD. The people recognized that God was the source of their blessings.

“For David his servant, and for Israel his people” God kept His covenant promises. He had promised David that his son would build the Temple (see 2 Samuel 7). This moment showed God’s faithfulness across generations.
