1 Kings 9:24

Posted on 18 May at 11:20

But Pharaohs daughter came vp out of the citie of Dauid, vnto her house which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo. 1 Kings 9:24 (KJV)

But Pharaoh’s daughter came up out of the city of David unto her house which

Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo. 1 Kings 9:24 (KJV)

In the verses that precede this statement Solomon, the son of King David, had finished constructing the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicated it to the Lord. After the dedication the Lord appeared to Solomon again and spoke to him, setting the stage for the king’s subsequent building projects.

The passage mentions Pharaoh’s daughter, who was Solomon’s wife. Her personal name is not given in this verse, though elsewhere Scripture identifies her simply as the daughter of Pharaoh.

“The city of David” refers to Jerusalem, the capital that David had established. Solomon’s reign continued the work of expanding and strengthening the city that his father had founded.

Solomon built a separate house for Pharaoh’s daughter, distinct from his own royal palace. This act demonstrates his desire to honor and provide for his wife, who came from a royal Egyptian lineage.

The verse concludes with the statement that Solomon also built Millo. Millo is understood to be a fortified mound or embankment within the city of David, contributing to the defensive walls and overall fortifications of Jerusalem.

Overall, this verse highlights Solomon’s extensive building activity, encompassing both domestic concerns—such as providing a dwelling for his queen—and military preparations through the fortification of the city. It reveals Solomon’s wisdom and resourcefulness as a builder and administrator, his commitment to honor his wife, and his determination to protect and prosper his kingdom. The passage also offers historical insight into the architectural development of ancient Jerusalem during Solomon’s reign.
