“As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance”

1 Peter 1:14 (KJV) encourages believers to live obedient lives, avoiding the sinful desires that characterized their lives before they came to faith in Christ. Let’s break down the verse to gain a deeper understanding:

Obedient Children:Peter addresses believers as “obedient children.” This description implies that those who have placed their faith in Christ are now part of God’s family and should demonstrate the characteristics of a child who obeys their loving Father.

Not fashioning yourselves:This phrase suggests that believers are not to conform or pattern their lives after their former lusts. Before coming to faith, they may have lived according to worldly desires and cravings. However, as Christians, they are called to a different standard.

According to the former lusts:Peter emphasizes that believers should not be shaped by their previous sinful desires. The “former lusts” refer to the passions and cravings they had before experiencing the transforming power of the gospel.

In your ignorance:The previous sinful lifestyle is attributed to ignorance, indicating a lack of understanding or knowledge about God’s ways and His truth. Ignorance often leads to indulging in sinful desires. However, with the revelation of Christ, believers are called to reject ignorance and live in the light of God’s truth.

Overall, 1 Peter 1:14 teaches us that as followers of Christ, we are called to live obedient lives, distinct from our former sinful ways. We are not to conform to the patterns of this world or be driven by selfish desires, but rather to live according to God’s standards of righteousness and truth.

This verse reminds us that our transformation in Christ should be evident in our attitudes, behaviours, and choices. As we grow in our knowledge and understanding of God’s Word, we are empowered to live lives that please Him, resisting the pull of our former sinful desires.

It’s important to note that while this verse specifically addresses the context of the early believers, its principles apply to all Christians throughout history. We are called to continually renew our minds, align our lives with God’s will, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in walking away from our former lusts.

By living in obedience to God’s commands and relying on His grace and guidance, we can experience the abundant life and the joy that comes from living in alignment with His purposes.
