“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s look at its broader context. The apostle Peter wrote this letter to encourage and strengthen the Christians who were facing persecution and trials. He reminded them of their identity as chosen people, living stones being built into a spiritual house, and the importance of holy living in a hostile world.

Quotation from Scripture:The verse begins by mentioning that what follows is a quotation from the Scripture. Peter is referring to the Old Testament Scriptures, specifically Isaiah 28:16, which says, “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”

Cornerstone:The verse describes Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the primary stone used in laying the foundation of a building. It determined the alignment and stability of the entire structure. Likewise, Jesus is the foundational stone upon which God builds His spiritual house, the Church. He is the cornerstone, chosen by God, precious, and sure.

Election and Preciousness:Peter emphasizes that Jesus Christ is elect and precious. He is chosen by God for a special purpose, and His worth and value are beyond measure. This highlights the unique and privileged position of Jesus as the foundation of our faith and the focal point of our lives.

Confidence in Belief:The verse concludes with a promise: “he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.” This means that those who put their faith and trust in Jesus will never be put to shame or disappointed. Believers can have confidence in their salvation, knowing that Jesus is the secure foundation upon which they stand.

Overall, 1 Peter 2:6 underscores the central role of Jesus Christ as the cornerstone of the Church and emphasizes the importance of faith in Him. Believers are encouraged to place their trust in Christ and find assurance that they will not be confounded or disappointed. This verse reminds us of the firm foundation we have in Jesus, and it encourages us to build our lives upon Him, living faithfully even in the face of trials and challenges.
