Listen to this article

“But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters”

Context:Before delving into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context of the passage. The Apostle Peter wrote this letter to the Christians who were scattered throughout various regions due to persecution. In 1 Peter 4:12-19, Peter addresses the suffering that believers may encounter for their faith.

Verse:“But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters” (1 Peter 4:15, KJV).

Avoidance of wrongdoing:Peter advises the believers not to suffer or face persecution for committing heinous crimes such as murder or theft. As followers of Christ, Christians are called to live a life of integrity and righteousness, avoiding any involvement in evil deeds.

The distinction of suffering:Peter makes a clear distinction between suffering for doing wrong and suffering for being a Christian. Suffering for the cause of Christ is considered honorable, as it aligns with Christ’s own suffering and the example set by other faithful believers throughout history.

Busybody in other men’s matters:The term “busybody” refers to someone who meddles in other people’s affairs, intruding into matters that do not concern them. Peter admonishes believers not to suffer for being intrusive or overly curious about other people’s lives. Instead, they should focus on their own conduct and responsibilities, living in a manner that glorifies God.
