1 Samuel 1:25
And they slew a bullocke, and brought the childe to Eli. 1 Samuel 1:25 (KJV)
The verse is situated in the story of Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel. To grasp its meaning we must recall the background given in 1 Samuel 1:1‑20. Hannah was one of the two wives of Elkanah, a man of Ramathaim‑zophim, and she was barren. Each year Elkanah took his family up to Shiloh to worship and offer sacrifice to the Lord. During one of these pilgrimages Hannah was deeply distressed and poured out her heart in prayer, begging the Lord for a child. In the intensity of her prayer she made a solemn vow to dedicate the child to the Lord if He would grant her request.
The high priest Eli observed Hannah’s silent, fervent prayer and mistakenly thought she was drunk. After rebuking her, Eli learned that she was pouring out her soul before the Lord. He blessed her, and soon Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son, naming him Samuel, which means “heard by God.”
When Samuel was weaned, Hannah kept her vow. She prepared a sacrifice that included three bullocks, an ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and she brought the child to the house of the Lord in Shiloh to present him to Eli. The act of slaughtering the bullock and bringing Samuel to Eli fulfilled Hannah’s promise, acknowledged that Samuel was a gift from God, and dedicated him to a life of service in the sanctuary.
Hannah’s offering also displayed her faithfulness and obedience. By giving up something precious she demonstrated her devotion to the Lord. Moreover, by entrusting Samuel to Eli, she placed her son under the spiritual guidance of the high priest, marking Samuel’s transition from her care to service in the house of the Lord.
The narrative of Hannah and Samuel stands as an inspiring example of faith, perseverance, and the power of prayer. It reminds believers of the importance of dedicating one’s life and loved ones to God, trusting in His faithfulness, and remaining steadfast in commitment to Him.
