1 Samuel 10:22
Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.
1 Samuel 10:22 (KJV)
Context
At Mizpah, all Israel gathered to confirm the king God had chosen. The lot fell on Saul of the tribe of Benjamin, but when the people looked for him, he was not found. They asked the Lord again, and He answered that Saul was hiding among the baggage.
Meaning
Saul’s hiding shows his reluctance and fear of the heavy task of kingship. He was not confident or proud, but hesitant. Yet God knew exactly where he was and revealed him. This shows that God’s choice does not depend on human courage or readiness. Even when Saul tried to stay hidden, the Lord’s purpose moved forward. His hesitation did not surprise God or delay His plan.
Biblical connections
The casting of lots was a way to learn God’s will in Israel, as Proverbs 16:33 says the lot’s decision comes from the Lord. The people’s further inquiry shows their dependence on God even after the first answer. They did not assume or rush ahead; they sought Him again. Saul’s later pride and disobedience stand in sharp contrast to his humble start. The same man who hid now would one day act on his own, but God’s choice remained sure.
Application
When God calls us to a task, we may feel inadequate or want to hide. Saul’s example encourages us not to let fear stop us from obeying. God sees us in our hiding places and will bring us forward in His time. He equips those He chooses. We can bring our hesitation to Him in prayer, trusting that He who began the work will complete it.
Reflection
God’s plan is not blocked by our hesitation. He knows our weaknesses and still calls us. Trust that He who revealed Saul will also guide and strengthen you to fulfill His purpose. When you feel like hiding, remember that the Lord sees you and has already prepared the way.
