Listen to this article

When he had caused the tribe of Beniamin to come neere by their families, the familie of Matri was taken, and Saul the sonne of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. 1 Samuel 10:21 (KJV)

Context: The book of 1 Samuel records the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of kingship in Israel. The Israelites asked for a king to lead them like the surrounding nations, and God granted this request by appointing Saul as the first king of Israel.

Saul’s Selection: In 1 Samuel 10, the prophet Samuel, under God’s direction, was instructed to anoint Saul as king over Israel. Prior to this verse, Samuel had gathered all the tribes of Israel and, by casting lots, selected the tribe of Benjamin (1 Samuel 10:20). The selection then moved from the tribe to the individual families.

The Family of Matri: From the tribe of Benjamin, the lot fell on the family of Matri. Casting lots was a common Old‑Testament method for seeking God’s guidance, using objects such as stones or sticks to reveal divine will. The lot’s fall on the Matri family set the stage for the next step in God’s plan.

Saul’s Selection: As a member of the Matri family, Saul, the son of Kish, was chosen to become king. This verse underscores that Saul’s appointment was a matter of divine will rather than human ambition or political maneuvering.

Saul’s Humility: When the officials went to present Saul as king, they could not find him. The text notes that Saul was hiding among the supplies (see 1 Samuel 10:22), illustrating his humility and sense of unworthiness. Rather than seeking power, he initially withdrew, showing a modest disposition before accepting his divine calling.

Application: The passage teaches that God is the ultimate authority in choosing leaders, orchestrating the selection process according to His purpose. It also highlights humility as a vital characteristic for those called to authority, reminding believers that leaders should approach their responsibilities with dependence on God.

In summary, 1 Samuel 10:21 reveals the divine selection of Saul as Israel’s first king, emphasizes the role of casting lots in discerning God’s will, and showcases Saul’s humble response before his coronation. The verse affirms God’s sovereignty in leadership and the importance of humility for those entrusted with authority.
