1 Samuel 11:15

And all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul King before the Lord in Gilgal: and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord: and there Saul and all the men of Israel reioyced greatly. 1 Samuel 11:15 (KJV)

Background: The book of 1 Samuel is part of the Old Testament and provides historical accounts of the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. It records the transition from the period of the judges to the reign of King Saul, highlighting the nation’s shift toward centralized leadership.

Saul’s Kingship: This verse describes the public recognition of Saul as king of Israel. After leading a successful military campaign against the Ammonites and delivering the city of Jabesh‑gilead, Saul’s leadership and bravery were evident to the people. As a result, they gathered at Gilgal, a significant location in Israel’s history, to acknowledge Saul as their king.

The Role of Gilgal: Gilgal holds great importance in the Old Testament. It was the place where the Israelites first camped after crossing the Jordan River into the Promised Land (Joshua 4:19) and where Joshua circumcised the new generation of Israelites (Joshua 5:2‑9). It later became the site of several key events, including the anointing of Saul as king (1 Samuel 10:1) and the public affirmation of his reign (1 Samuel 11:15). Gilgal also served as a setting for covenant‑related activities, such as the renewal of the covenant with God at Mount Ebal (Joshua 8:30‑35).

Sacrifices of Peace Offerings: In Gilgal the people offered peace offerings before the LORD. A peace offering was an animal sacrifice expressing thanksgiving, fellowship, and devotion to God, symbolizing reconciliation and a peaceful relationship with God and with one another.

Rejoicing and Unity: The verse concludes by stating that Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. This celebration marked a pivotal moment in Israel’s history, indicating the people’s acceptance of Saul’s leadership and their hope for a prosperous future under his reign.
