Listen to this article

And they said vnto the messengers that came, Thus shall yee say vnto the men of Iabesh Gilead, To morrow by that time the sunne be hote, ye shal haue helpe. And the messengers came, and shewed it to the men of Iabesh, and they were glad. 1 Samuel 11:9 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel records the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. In chapter 11 the Ammonites, led by Nahash, threaten the Israelite city of Jabesh‑gilead, intending to gouge out the right eye of every citizen. Jabesh‑gilead, situated east of the Jordan in the territory of the tribe of Gad, was a prominent and valiant city facing imminent danger.

In response, the men of Jabesh‑gilead sent messengers to Samuel, asking for assistance. Samuel instructed the messengers to tell the people, “To‑morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help.” The messengers delivered this promise of help, and the men of Jabesh‑gilead were glad at the news of imminent deliverance.

The passage highlights several timeless lessons. First, the example of seeking help reminds believers that we should not hesitate to reach out to fellow believers when overwhelmed by challenges. The Israelites’ willingness to appeal to the wider community shows the importance of mutual support. Second, the promise that help would arrive “by the next day, when the sun was hot” points to God’s faithful timing. God often intervenes at the right moment, providing solutions that we may not anticipate, and we are called to trust in His timing and remain patient. Third, the gladness experienced by the people underscores the joy that accompanies true deliverance. As believers we can find comfort in knowing that God is our ultimate deliverer, and His rescue brings genuine joy even amid adversity. Finally, the rapid response of the other Israelite tribes demonstrates the power of unity. When believers unite in purpose, they become a source of strength and encouragement for one another, accomplishing great things together.

Overall, 1 Samuel 11:9 teaches the value of seeking help, trusting in God’s timely assistance, rejoicing in deliverance, and fostering unity among God’s people.
