1 Samuel 12:7

Listen to this article

Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord, of all the righteous acts of the Lord, which he did to you and your fathers. 1 Samuel 12:7 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel belongs to the Old Testament and records a pivotal era in Israel’s history. Samuel, the last judge of Israel and a prophet, stands at the crossroads between the period of the judges and the establishment of the monarchy. In this verse Samuel is addressing the assembled people as they prepare to anoint a king. He urges them to pause, to listen, and to allow him to reason with them before the Lord.

Samuel’s purpose is to remind the nation of the countless righteous acts of the Lord throughout their ancestry. By recalling how God has acted faithfully toward Israel—delivering them, providing for them, and demonstrating His righteousness—Samuel highlights the continuous involvement of the Almighty in the lives of His people. This reminder serves a dual aim: to foster gratitude and to guard the people against the recurring tendency to forget God’s faithfulness and turn to idolatry.

The passage also underscores the importance of remembrance. When the Israelites recall the Lord’s past blessings, they are less likely to stray from His covenant. Samuel therefore calls the people to keep the Lord as the ultimate authority, the “Lord of all,” affirming His sovereignty and rightful place as King over Israel.

Application follows naturally. Believers today are encouraged to cultivate a heart of gratitude by regularly remembering God’s faithfulness in their own lives. Such remembrance strengthens commitment to His will and reduces the allure of wandering from His path. Moreover, sharing testimonies of God’s goodness with others becomes a powerful means of encouraging the faith community, echoing Samuel’s call to keep the memory of divine righteousness alive in every generation.
