Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

Context

Earlier, many Israelite soldiers hid in caves, rocks, thickets, and pits because they feared the Philistines (1 Samuel 13:6). They were outnumbered and poorly equipped. While hiding in Mount Ephraim, they heard that the Philistines were fleeing. The news moved them to leave their hiding places and join the battle.

Meaning

The verse shows a sudden change. Men who had been afraid became bold pursuers. Their fear turned to courage when they realized the enemy was retreating. The phrase “followed hard after them” means they chased the Philistines closely and with determination. This was not a small effort; they pressed forward with renewed strength. Their pursuit was a deliberate response to the evidence of God’s work.

God had already given victory through Jonathan’s act of faith. The hidden men did not start the battle, but they joined it once God turned the tide. Their response shows that God’s deliverance emboldens His people to act.
