1 Samuel 14:8

Then said Ionathan, Behold, we will passe ouer vnto these men, and we will discouer our selues vnto them. 1 Samuel 14:8 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel records Israel’s shift from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy under Saul. In chapter 14 the Philistines had assembled a great army against Israel. Saul and his son Jonathan were at the head of the Israelite forces, while many of the soldiers were cowering in caves and Saul was waiting at Gilgal.

Jonathan’s response to the crisis demonstrates courageous initiative. He says to his armour‑bearer, “Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord, to save by many or by few.” In verse 8 he declares, “Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.” One study version records his words as, “Behold, we will pass over unto these men, lest the people hide themselves from me, and the Philistines get them, and turn the battle into a great loss for us.” His willingness to move forward, even when fear surrounded him, teaches that believers may need to step out in faith and act according to God’s leading.

Jonathan also models trust in divine guidance. In verse 10 he tells his companion, “If they say, ‘Come up,’ then we will go up; but if they say, ‘Tarry with us,’ then we will tarry a while.” He sought a sign from the Lord before committing to attack, showing that true confidence rests on God’s direction rather than on human judgment. Believers are likewise encouraged to seek God’s confirmation through prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel.

The phrase “we will discover ourselves unto them” reveals a strategic intent to expose Israel’s presence to the enemy, turning concealment into a tactical advantage. Spiritually, this reminds us to confront the works of darkness openly, rather than remaining hidden or passive, and to rely on God’s strength in spiritual warfare.

Application

  • Take proactive, courageous steps when God calls, trusting that He can work through both few and many.
  • Seek God’s guidance and confirmation before major decisions, grounding your actions in prayer and Scripture.
  • Expose and confront spiritual darkness boldly, remembering that God equips us for victory.
