Samuel also saide vnto Saul, The Lord sent me to annoint thee to bee king ouer his people, ouer Israel: nowe therefore hearken thou vnto the voyce of the words of the Lord. 1 Samuel 15:1 (KJV)

This verse marks a pivotal moment in the relationship between Samuel, the prophet of Israel, and Saul, the first king of Israel. Let us explore the context and key themes surrounding this passage.

Historical Background: 1 Samuel is an Old Testament book that describes the transition of leadership in Israel from judges to kings. Samuel, who served as both judge and prophet, played a significant role in this transition. At this point Saul had already been anointed as king by Samuel in 1 Samuel 10:1.

Samuel’s Commission: In 1 Samuel 15:1 Samuel reminds Saul of the divine commission he had received. He states that the LORD sent him to anoint Saul to be king over His people, Israel, emphasizing that Saul’s kingship was not the result of his own ambition or merit but of God’s choice.

Obedience to God’s Word: Samuel then instructs Saul to “hearken thou unto the voice of the LORD,” or “hearken, O king, unto the voice of the LORD.” This underscores the importance of obedience to God’s commands. As the anointed king, Saul’s role was not only to rule over the people but also to submit to the authority of God’s word, setting the expectation that his leadership be grounded in obedience to divine instruction.

The Nature of God’s Instructions: The specific command that Samuel will convey in the following verses involves the complete destruction of the Amalekites and their possessions, a directive given because of the Amalekites’ earlier hostility toward Israel (see Exodus 17:8‑16) and their continued wickedness.

Application: This verse raises important principles for believers today. It highlights the significance of recognizing and accepting God’s calling and purpose for our lives. It reminds us that any leadership position or role we undertake should be approached with a heart of obedience to God’s Word. Just as Saul was given a specific command, we too should seek to align our actions and decisions with the teachings and principles found in Scripture. The passage also underscores God’s justice and the consequences of disobedience; Saul’s response will reveal his character and affect his reign, serving as a reminder for us to heed God’s word and pursue a life of obedience and righteousness.

Remember, a comprehensive study of a biblical passage often involves examining surrounding verses, the historical context, and connecting it with the broader themes and messages of the Bible.
