1 Samuel 16:18

Listen to this article

“Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel focuses on the transition of Israel from the time of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul and later King David. In this particular verse, Samuel the prophet has been sent by God to anoint the future king of Israel, as Saul’s disobedience had led to God rejecting him as king.

Background:Samuel had been instructed by God to go to Bethlehem and anoint one of the sons of Jesse as the future king. When Samuel arrived, he saw Jesse’s eldest son, Eliab, and assumed he was the chosen one because of his appearance. However, God reminded Samuel that He looks at the heart, not the outward appearance.

The servant’s observation:In this verse, one of Jesse’s servants speaks up and shares his knowledge about David, Jesse’s youngest son. The servant describes David as:

“Cunning in playing”: David was skilful in playing the harp and had a talent for music. Later in the book, we learn that he played the harp to soothe Saul’s troubled spirit (1 Samuel 16:23).

“A mighty valiant man, and a man of war”: Although David was still young at this point, the servant recognised his bravery and military prowess. David would later become a renowned warrior, defeating Goliath and leading Israel to many victories.

“Prudent in matters”: David showed wisdom and discernment in his decision-making, which became evident throughout his life. He sought guidance from God and demonstrated good judgment in various situations.

“A comely person”: David was not only physically attractive but also carried an aura of dignity and charisma.

The LORD is with him:The servant acknowledges that God’s presence was evident in David’s life. This divine favour and guidance would become a defining aspect of David’s kingship.

God looks at the heart:The servant’s description of David emphasises qualities of character rather than external appearances. This highlights the importance of having a heart that is dedicated to God and aligned with His purposes.

God equips His chosen ones:Despite David’s young age, God had already equipped him with various skills and qualities necessary for his future role as king. This serves as a reminder that God equips and empowers those whom He calls, regardless of their age or background.

God’s presence makes a difference:The acknowledgement that the LORD was with David underscores the significance of God’s presence in our lives. When we walk with God, He guides, strengthens, and blesses us.

In conclusion, this verse provides a glimpse into the qualities and potential of David, the future king of Israel. It reminds us that God sees beyond external appearances and values the condition of our hearts. It also encourages us to recognise and rely on God’s presence and guidance in our own lives.
