Then answered one of the seruants, and said, Behold, I haue seene a sonne of Iesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of warre, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him. 1 Samuel 16:18 (KJV)
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite,
that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD
is with him. 1 Samuel 16:18 (KJV)
The book of 1 Samuel records Israel’s shift from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy. Samuel the prophet had been sent by God to anoint the future king because Saul’s disobedience had caused God to reject him. God instructed Samuel to go to Bethlehem and select one of Jesse’s sons. When Samuel arrived, he first saw Eliab, the eldest, and assumed he was the chosen one, but the Lord reminded Samuel that He looks at the heart, not outward appearance.
In this verse a servant of Jesse speaks up and describes the youngest son, David. He says David is “cunning in playing,” skillful in music, a “mighty valiant man” and “brave,” a “man of war” and warrior, “prudent in matters” and prudent in his affairs, a “comely person” and handsome, and that “the LORD is with him.” The servant also calls him “a man after God’s own heart.” These observations highlight David’s musical talent, courage, wisdom, physical attractiveness, and divine favor.
The servant’s description underscores the biblical principle that God looks at the heart rather than external appearance. Though David was young and seemingly insignificant, God had already equipped him with the qualities needed for future leadership.
God equips His chosen ones regardless of age or background. David’s abilities in music, warfare, and wise judgment were already present, showing that God prepares those He calls.
The acknowledgment that the LORD is with David emphasizes the impact of divine presence. When God walks with a person, He guides, strengthens, and blesses that individual.
In conclusion, this passage offers a glimpse of David’s character and potential as the future king of Israel. It reminds believers that God values the condition of the heart above outward looks and that reliance on God’s presence and guidance is essential for every life.
