1 Samuel 16:9

Listen to this article

Then Iesse made Shammah to passe by: and he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this. 1 Samuel 16:9 (KJV)

“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

Context: 1 Samuel 16:7 is part of the story of Samuel anointing David as the future king of Israel. Samuel was sent by God to the house of Jesse to find and anoint the one whom God had chosen as the next king. Initially, Samuel was drawn to Eliab, Jesse’s eldest son, because of his outward appearance. However, God reminded Samuel that He looks beyond the external appearance and focuses on the heart of a person.

The Importance of the Heart:

This verse emphasizes that God’s evaluation of a person is not based on external appearance, social status, or physical stature, but on the condition of the heart. The heart represents the innermost being—thoughts, motives, character, and relationship with God. God sees the true essence of an individual, discerning faith, sincerity, and obedience. The principle highlights the need to cultivate a pure heart and maintain a genuine relationship with God.

God’s Perspective vs. Man’s Perspective:

The passage draws a clear contrast between divine and human judgment. Humans tend to judge by outward appearances, focusing on physical attributes or superficial qualities. God, however, looks directly into the heart, assessing spiritual and moral aspects that are not readily visible. This teaches believers not to be swayed by appearances or to judge others by worldly standards.

Application:

The verse challenges each of us to examine our own hearts and motivations. Rather than placing excessive importance on external appearances or seeking validation from others, we should develop a heart that pleases God, nurturing humility, faithfulness, obedience, and love. We must also be cautious in judging others, recognizing our limited ability to see beyond the surface. Instead, we are called to emulate God’s perspective by seeking to understand and value the hearts of those around us.

Overall Message:

1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that God’s assessment of individuals is based on the condition of their hearts rather than external attributes. By prioritizing inner qualities and spiritual integrity, we align ourselves with God’s will, deepen our relationship with Him, and learn to value people for their character and spiritual walk rather than superficial measures.
