Listen to this article

Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battell, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Iudah, and pitched betweene Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim. 1 Samuel 17:1 (KJV)

This opening verse prepares the reader for one of the most celebrated narratives in Scripture—the encounter between David and Goliath. Historically, the Philistines were a powerful and persistent threat to Israel during the period of 1 Samuel. Their frequent clashes with the Israelites are well documented, and this verse records another mobilization of their forces for a forthcoming confrontation.

Shochoh (also rendered Shocoh) and Azekah (sometimes called Azechem) were towns situated within the territory of Judah. The Philistines set up camp in the plain of Ephes‑dammim, the area lying between these two locations. While the precise geography is not definitively settled, the text makes clear that the Philistines positioned themselves strategically to challenge Israel.

The gathering of the Philistine armies signals hostile intent toward the Israelites. By assembling for war, they demonstrated a desire to subjugate the people of God and to assert their own dominance in the region.

Against this backdrop, the narrative quickly moves to the young shepherd David, who would later become Israel’s great king. The verse provides the geographical and military setting for the dramatic showdown in which David confronts the Philistine champion Goliath. This confrontation becomes the focal point of the chapter and illustrates God’s power working through an unlikely vessel.

Several spiritual lessons emerge from this introductory verse. First, it underscores the recurring theme of conflict between God’s people and opposing forces, reminding believers that battles—both external and internal—are part of the spiritual journey. Second, it foreshadows the extraordinary victory that David will achieve with divine assistance, teaching that faith, courage, and reliance on God can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Finally, the passage highlights that God often chooses ordinary individuals—such as a shepherd boy—to accomplish extraordinary purposes, demonstrating that divine strength can work through humble, faithful hearts.

In summary, 1 Samuel 17:1 sets the stage for the confrontation between the Philistines and the Israelites, leading to the well‑known story of David and Goliath. It serves as a reminder of the spiritual battles we may face, the importance of faith and courage, and God’s ability to work through ordinary people to achieve extraordinary outcomes.
