1 Samuel 2:29

Listen to this article

Wherefore kicke ye at my sacrifice, and at mine offering, which I haue commaunded in my habitation, and honourest thy sonnes aboue mee, to make your selues fat with the chiefest of all the offrings of Israel my people? 1 Samuel 2:29 (KJV)

In this verse God confronts Eli, the high priest, and his sons, who were also priests, rebuking them for their disrespectful attitude toward the sacrifices and offerings brought to Him. They treated the sacrifices lightly and used their positions for personal gain, showing a clear disregard for God’s commands.

Eli and his sons were more interested in their own desires and indulgences than in honoring God. Their appetites were placed above their responsibilities to serve and honor God faithfully, revealing misplaced priorities and a lack of true honor toward the Lord.

God had established the sacrificial system and given specific instructions for the priests to follow. Eli’s sons disregarded those instructions and treated the offerings with contempt, a direct affront to God’s authority and the divine order He instituted.

The consequence of this disobedience is severe judgment. In the following verses God pronounces judgment upon Eli’s household, declaring that He will cut off the strength of Eli’s lineage and that his sons would die on the same day, even dying in battle with the Philistines as recorded later in 1 Samuel 4:10‑11. Their dishonorable actions lead to the loss of their privileged priestly position, and God will raise up a faithful priest who will walk in obedience and honor His commands.

Application: Believers should approach God with reverence and respect, honoring His commands and instructions. Worship and service must not be taken lightly or used for personal gain. We are to prioritize God and His will above our own desires and pleasures, for putting anything or anyone above God leads to disobedience and dishonoring His name.

Eli’s story serves as a reminder that disobedience to God’s commands carries consequences. It is essential to heed His instructions and live in a manner that pleases Him. Overall, 1 Samuel 2:29 highlights the importance of honoring God’s commands and priorities while warning against the consequences of disobedience and disregarding His divine order.
