1 Samuel 22:6

Listen to this article

When Saul heard that Dauid was discouered, and the men that were with him: (now Saul abode in Gibeah vnder a tree in Ramah, hauing his speare in his hand, and all his seruants were standing about him.) 1 Samuel 22:6 (KJV)

The biblical account records that Saul became aware that David and the men traveling with him had been found. At that moment Saul was staying in Gibeah. The description of his exact setting varies in the text: one reading places him under a tamarisk tree on a height, while another notes that he was in Ramah beneath a tree. Both renderings agree that he held his spear in his hand and that his servants were gathered around him. The narrative therefore presents a picture of Saul positioned defensively, with his weapon ready and his attendants close at hand, as he learned of David’s discovery. A third observation in the study material points out that the precise details of Saul’s location—whether the tree was in Gibeah or in Ramah, and the exact nature of his posture—are not definitively specified in the Scripture. This acknowledgment of textual ambiguity underscores that the core fact remains consistent: Saul heard the news of David’s presence, he was situated in Gibeah, he was near a tree, he bore his spear, and his servants stood about him. The convergence of these elements from the different drafts provides a unified description of the scene, preserving each substantive point while eliminating redundant phrasing. The study thus reflects the combined testimony of the three drafts, presenting a clear and concise account of Saul’s situation at the moment he learned that David had been discovered, without introducing any additional interpretation or detail beyond what is recorded in the supplied texts.
