1 Samuel 23:17

“And Jonathan said unto David, Be of good comfort, my son: for as the LORD hath been with me, so he will be with thee.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel tells the story of Israel’s transition from the period of judges to the establishment of a monarchy. In this particular passage, David, who has been anointed as the future king of Israel, is on the run from King Saul, who is seeking to kill him.

Encouragement in the midst of danger:Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s dear friend, meets David secretly and reassures him not to be afraid. Jonathan acknowledges the threat Saul poses, but he wants David to find courage in the fact that God’s hand is upon him.

God’s plan for David’s kingship:Jonathan affirms that David is destined to be the king of Israel. This confirms God’s earlier promise to David through the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 16:12-13). Despite the present circumstances, Jonathan assures David that he will be the future king.

Jonathan’s humility and loyalty:Jonathan humbly recognizes that he will not be the next king, but he declares his willingness to serve and support David as the future king. This demonstrates Jonathan’s loyalty and his submission to God’s plan for David.

Saul’s knowledge:Jonathan acknowledges that Saul, his father, is also aware of David’s destiny to be king. This implies that Saul’s pursuit of David is a direct opposition to God’s plan and shows Saul’s rebellion against God’s anointed.

Key Lessons:

  • Trusting in God’s protection:Even when facing danger or challenging circumstances, we can find solace in knowing that God’s hand is upon us. David’s experiences throughout his life, including this passage, serve as a reminder that God protects and guides His chosen ones.
  • Fulfilling God’s purpose despite opposition:David’s journey to kingship was not without trials and opposition, yet God’s plan prevailed. We learn that no human resistance can ultimately thwart God’s purposes. Similarly, we should remain steadfast in pursuing God’s purpose for our lives.
  • Loyalty and humility in relationships:Jonathan’s loyalty to David is an exemplary model of how believers can support one another in the pursuit of God’s calling. Jonathan’s willingness to serve despite his own aspirations illustrates the power of self‑less devotion to God’s purposes.

Application:

  • Seek opportunities to encourage those facing spiritual battles, as Jonathan did for David.
  • Study God’s promises for your life and apply them in daily decisions.
  • Prioritize humility and loyalty to God above personal ambition.

May the Lord continue to speak truth, love, and hope into your lives.
